Inspiration:
I was contacted by a prospective client who was inspired by a t-shirt with the words "Spiritual Gangster," Seeing that this shirt had continuously brought her good vibes, she asked me to create a wood piece with the same message to bring forward similar energy to her family room. I noticed that her home was totem for various crystals, fresh flowers and a buddha! I knew immediately that I wanted the wood piece to make a statement and include artwork of a Hand Mudra.
Mudras:
Through my practice of yoga, I've learned that the position of the hands have the ability to evoke a particular state of mind. They hold an innate healing power that can directly influence the energies of our emotional states, physical shape and spiritual forms. These various hand positions are referred to as Mudras. The particular Mudra highlighted in this piece is called the Abhaya Mudra.
Abhaya Mudra Hand:
"Abhaya" is a Sanskrit (ancient Indo- European language of India) word that symbolizes fearlessness. The Abhaya Mudra is capable of generating peace through its power to repel fear. This form of fearlessness provides reassurance, thus inviting the energy of protection into the space.
The gesture includes an open palm facing outward with all five fingers pointing up to the heavens, creating a sense of balance to help overcome any existing fear. The positioning leads to a stress- free, emotional harmony that helps to calm the mind and relieve anxiety.
Third eye detail: You will see that within the Abhaya Mudra, I've included the "Third eye" to bring insight and enlightenment into the space. The addition of this symbol brings forward elevation to a higher consciousness, allowing the owner to live in the moment.
As I was creating the third eye, I felt that my own third eye had awakened.
There are times in creating where the artist tends to look past the process, and ahead to the moment the piece is finished. Deadlines have that kind of potential that threatens the authentic joy of creating. Working on this piece helped me come back to the true joy of creating. It was a much needed reminder to enjoy all parts of a process.
I experienced a great deal of gratitude getting to create such a symbolic piece of art. When we look at art as an avenue of healing with a deeper meaning, we realize just how powerful it can be.
Each piece is sanded down, stained and painted in our little workshop of a home garage in California. All items are repurposed from wood left over to be trashed. This includes anything between palettes found on the road, to wood scraps on their final destination of the dump. I am committed to creating pieces under an environmentally friendly process to help conserve our world to its natural state.
